About Kindred Spirits

The concept of “kindred spirits” between teachers, children and parents signifies a harmonious and collaborative relationship within the educational context. It suggests shared values, open communication, and a mutual commitment to the child’s well-being and development. When teachers, children and parents feel a sense of connection and understanding, it creates a supportive environment that fosters effective learning, positive social-emotional development, and a shared investment in the child’s educational journey.

Meet Karen

Karen James

Owner/Founder/Head Directress

Growing up in Alberta amid an interesting family legacy of farmers and educators, my deep affection for the prairies was undeniable. However the adventurous spirits of myself, and my best friend/future spouse, led us to the beautiful West Coast over 30 years ago. In 2019, we made the decision to return to Alberta, seeking closeness to our extended family and a reconnection with the enchantment of prairie life.

My Montessori journey commenced at the Western Montessori Teachers’ College in Vancouver, BC, where I received training under the guidance of Professor Emeritus Carol Scarratt, who today is still my mentor and “kindred spirit.” This institution was a satellite school of the St. Nicholas Montessori Centre in London, England, established by two former students trained directly under Maria Montessori, and accredited by the International Montessori Society (IMS). As a fourth-generation trained Montessori teacher, I take pride in my heritage. Upon completion of my Montessori training I graduated with high distinction, achieving the top position in my class during the practical examination. After concluding my Montessori training I also finished Early Childhood Education training at Vancouver Community College, and then dedicated a decade to serving as a Montessori preschool (Casa) Directress, Head Directress, and Administrator in Vancouver, B.C., until the birth of my first child. As well as being an experienced Montessori Directress, I also applied my musical knowledge as a preschool music teacher in diverse Montessori schools across Vancouver. Over the past two decades, I homeschooled both of my sons, infusing my knowledge of Montessori and music into their learning journeys. Additionally, I dedicated many years as a Young Naturalist Club Leader in the Lower Mainland of B.C, as well as previous volunteer work at Calgary’s Central Library and the annual Calgary’s Big Book Sale.

As for my family life, it is both eclectic and adventurous. I’ve been an integral part, as the general manager of an international songwriting music business, owned and operated by my spouse, with our two sons now working along side him. Outside of the realm of music creation, you’ll often find my family strolling along the river, reading by the fire, visiting family or exploring nature.
